Trauma informed centre – By Julie
As I study my trauma-informed communities’ higher diploma at The Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE), it has prompted me to reflect on the Art4Space environment and why I believe it is successful. I will qualify as a practitioner in January 2026, and I look forward to further implementing the positive practices I learn.
In education, Dr Karen Treisman states “Every intervention is a therapeutic intervention.”
This principle underlines our impact; we make a difference. Recognising that no significant learning occurs without substantial relationships among staff and participants is essential. Our Community Arts Centre, ‘The Creative heart of Lambeth,’ embodies predictable, present, consistent, structured, compassionate, connected, and kind relationships and values.
Moreover, the idea of community is integral to our mission. It is everybody’s business – ensuring collective engagement and regular check-ins for all involved. Our relationally rich setting serves as a sanctuary for many, emphasising that people don’t want to be fixed; they desire to be heard, valued, and seen. We provide a platform for untold stories to emerge, often speaking through the medium of art.
Art4Space operates as an alternative education centre, focusing on social and emotional learning, and serving as a centre for holistic wellness. This unique space encourages individuals to explore ideas and be wildly creative, for both personal and communal growth.
