Beyond the Making: Life Inside Art4Space – By Rae

When people think of a community arts space like Art4Space, they usually imagine making things and
yes, that’s definitely part of it. But being in it regularly as an intern, has made me realise it’s not
just about what gets made; it’s about what happens around it.

A big part of the studio isn’t just the making, it’s the environment. Whether it’s supporting
workshops, helping during Holidays Activities and Food Programme (HAF), or even just being
present in the space, I’ve started to notice how important that atmosphere is. It’s calm but
active, structured but still open. People can come in, create and connect without pressure.
There’s always something going on at Art4Space. One day it might be textiles, another day mosaics,
or working with ceramics. Being involved in some of these activities, I’ve seen how each one
brings out something different in people, including myself. Some people come in confident and
focused, others are unsure at first, but slowly settle into it. You can actually see people relax into
the process.

Equally, there’s a quieter side to the space that people don’t always think about. As an intern,
I’ve been involved in things like setting up materials, helping with food deliveries, archiving, and
just helping to keep the space running day to day. It might not sound like much, but it all
contributes to how the studio feels. Without those small things, the whole experience would be
completely different.

Something I’ve noticed is how the team interacts with each other and everyone who comes into
the space. Being part of it, there’s a natural flow in how we work together, and you can see the
respect in how people communicate. That same energy carries over to volunteers and visitors,
making the space feel welcoming without pressure. It’s less about formal interaction and more
about genuine connection, and being part of that as an intern is something I’ve really
appreciated.

Being part of Art4Space has made me realise that creativity isn’t always about the final
product. Sometimes it’s about the process, the environment, and the people you share it with.
It’s about having somewhere to go where you can make something, try something new, or just
take a moment out of your day.
And that’s what makes the space what it is!
