Make & Mend: A Space for Softness, Creativity and Exploration – Reflection from Ramel
The Make & Mend space is a space that advocates softness and honours the process of being creative. It is a place where textiles become a way of exploring, expressing and connecting with ourselves.
You don’t need to have any previous experience with sewing or textiles to join our courses or attend our workshops. Whether you are completely new to sewing or already have some experience with a sewing machine, there is space for you to learn, experiment and create at your own pace.
Learning to Sew, Gently
We offer intimate beginner and intermediate sewing courses that invite a gentle and accessible approach to learning how to sew.
Our Beginner Sewing Course introduces you to the basics of using a sewing machine, while teaching you how to construct practical and useful pieces. Throughout the course, you will learn something new each week, working on projects such as tote bags, cushion covers and pencil cases. The intention is not only to learn how to use a sewing machine, but to build confidence and develop a relationship with making.
Our Intermediate Sewing Course is designed for people who already have some experience with sewing and using a machine. The course introduces you to translating a sewing pattern into a finished garment. You will learn how to make a linen shirt, alongside either a pair of trousers or a tiered skirt, giving you the opportunity to complete the course with your own handmade outfit.
The garments are intentionally simple but effective, allowing you to develop a range of valuable skills along the way — from hemming and constructing pockets to creating an elasticated waistband and understanding how a pattern comes together to form a garment.

Textiles as a Form of Expression
Alongside our sewing courses, I also facilitate textile workshops where participants can create their own tapestries by collaging different fabrics, colours and textures.
These workshops use textiles as a form of self-expression, allowing colour, texture and material to become a language of their own. I encourage people to be messy, experiment and lean into the world of abstract art — working more from the body and intuition and less from the mind.
Creating and being an artist is a very intuitive experience for me. I see art as a source of self-exploration, healing and storytelling, and this is something I want to bring into the Make & Mend space. I want the space to feel like somewhere you can come without needing to know exactly what you are doing. Somewhere you can experiment, make mistakes, follow your curiosity and simply enjoy the process of creating.
Looking Towards the Future
I’m excited to continue developing the Make & Mend space and create more workshops centred around self-exploration, storytelling and intuitive making.
I also want to develop workshops and courses grounded in sustainability and upcycling — exploring how we can transform materials we already have into something new and useful. This could include making tote bags, patchwork projects, homewares and other practical pieces from unwanted or leftover fabrics.
I feel that sewing is such an amazing and practical skill to have. Being able to alter your own clothes, repair something you love or transform an old curtain into a cushion cover can be empowering, creative and beneficial for both ourselves and the planet.
Ultimately, my goal is to make sewing and textile practice accessible to everyone. Whether you come to learn a practical skill, explore your creativity, meet other people, or simply spend some time making something with your hands, there is space for you here.
Let’s create, experiment and have some fun!
