Award-winning Community Arts Centre

We bring the creative heart to Lambeth

Art4Space is a non‑profit community interest company (CIC) that has been using art to create change and social justice since 1999.

For over 25 years, we’ve built a trusted creative home rooted in Lambeth — a place where people come to learn, make, connect and grow. Our Community Arts Centre offers arts and design education, commissions, training, outreach learning, projects and school education, alongside tailored corporate programmes that use creativity to strengthen teams, wellbeing, workplace culture and opportunities to give back.  We combine practical making with creative skills development and collaborative learning, supporting people in building skills, confidence, and connection. We also create progression routes in the creative industries, offering training, mentoring and real opportunities for people to develop their practice, gain experience and move into careers across art and culture.

Known as the Creative Heart of Lambeth, we provide a focused, purposeful environment where people of all ages and backgrounds work alongside skilled creative professionals. Our approach is inclusive and grounded in long‑term community engagement. We use sustainable practices, traditional craftsmanship and accessible creative pathways that build practical skills and strengthen people’s agency in creative and community life.

All income generated through our programmes and commissions is reinvested into inclusive arts provision for local people, particularly those facing barriers to participation and those who benefit from creative approaches to improving mental health. This includes creative health, youth leadership, volunteering and our social action programme, all of which strengthen resilience and a sense of belonging. Our impact is visible in the stories of the people we work with and the communities we serve.

We align our 2026–2030 vision with Lambeth Council’s new Creative Economy Strategy, which sets out a clear commitment to a stronger, fairer and more inclusive creative borough. As Lambeth prioritises connection, equity, skills and community impact, we continue to deliver on-the-ground work that benefits local people. We share Lambeth’s belief that creativity should be accessible, representative and rooted in place, and we are proud to contribute to a borough where everyone can thrive through arts, culture and creativity.

Art4Space is a deeply diverse organisation, with lived experience embedded across our core team, freelance practitioners, board and leadership. We prioritise co‑design, paid roles for people with lived experience and community‑led governance, ensuring that Black, global majority, disabled, LGBTQ+, single‑parent and other under‑represented voices shape our programmes and strategic direction. Our openness, transparency and first‑hand insight build trust, deepen engagement and support an authentic approach. This co‑production model strengthens service quality and increases people’s agency, resulting in meaningful and lasting impact.

Our programmes are co‑designed with participants, who shape session content, safeguarding approaches, and project priorities. Their lived experience directly informs our governance and decision‑making.

Vision

We use art and creativity as a catalyst for change

Mission

We enrich lives through the arts, supporting mental health, holistic wellness, and social justice. Through art and design education, we drive positive, sustainable change for individuals, communities, and the environment. We provide a safe, creative space where everyone is heard, valued, and seen.

Our work is grounded in real impact. For example, one participant joined our mosaic programme after long‑term isolation and went on to volunteer, exhibit their work, and reconnect with their community. Stories like this are captured in our annual report.

Mediums

Traditional craftsmanship – textiles, mosaic and ceramic

Mosaic

The art of mosaic making can be seen as a metaphor for the process of healing, as it involves piecing together fragments to create a cohesive whole, showing the power of patience, perseverance, and the intricate skills and techniques needed in heritage crafts to overcome challenges and create skilled mosaic projects.

Ceramic

Clay and ceramics are frequently employed in community and individual skills development due to their tactile qualities, and potential to engage participants in hands-on, creative activities that enhance craftsmanship, self-expression, and a sense of personal achievement.

Textiles

We use textiles in creative work by repurposing them for their versatility, tactile qualities, and ability to add unique textures and visual interest. This also allows us to showcase traditional skills and techniques that have been passed down through generations.

We are a Social Enterprise

Social enterprises are businesses which trade for a social or environmental purpose.

Why Our Work Matters

Lambeth is one of the most unequal boroughs in the UK. It sits within the top 10% most deprived local authorities, with deep and persistent inequalities affecting people across all ages. 38% of children live in poverty, one of the highest rates in London. Adults face some of the capital’s highest levels of housing insecurity, low-paid work, and mental health need. Older people experience significant isolation, with Lambeth ranked among the worst boroughs in England for social isolation in later life.

Nationally, the picture is no better. 1 in 6 children and young people now have a diagnosable mental health condition. Loneliness affects 3.8 million adults, and older people living in deprived areas are twice as likely to experience poor health, reduced mobility, and limited access to cultural or community spaces. Across the UK, access to the arts is deeply unequal: people from lower‑income backgrounds are far less likely to take part in creative activity, despite strong evidence that creativity improves wellbeing, confidence, and social connection.

At the same time, over a decade of cuts has removed more than 70% of youth and community service funding, leaving many neighbourhoods without safe, inclusive, creative spaces. Schools, families, health partners and community organisations consistently report rising anxiety, isolation, and disconnection — alongside fewer opportunities for people to learn, express themselves, and feel part of something positive.

Art4Space exists to change this. We provide accessible, inclusive, creative programmes for children, young people, adults and older people, offering stability, connection, and opportunity through art, making, and community. Our work tackles inequality head‑on by ensuring that creativity, culture and wellbeing are not luxuries for the few, but rights for everyone.

The de Brye Charitable Trust

We are proud to partner with Beauty Banks to tackle hygiene poverty head‑on, distributing hundreds of essential products every month to people who would otherwise go without.
Alongside this, our partnership with The Felix Project ensures good food is never wasted — reaching over 200 local people every week through our community‑led distribution hub.
Together, these partnerships strengthen dignity, reduce inequality, and place Art4Space at the heart of practical, compassionate action for those most affected by rising hardship.
