Art4Space has launched a new educational class pack for primary schools that focuses on reusing materials, recycling, and repairing. This initiative is inspired by the ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign from the Second World War and aims to teach about renewal and sustainability. It promotes resourcefulness and waste reduction. Participants will craft a unique batik book bag, learning valuable life skills and preserving traditional crafts. Textiles from different cultures worldwide have been a great inspiration.
Children will learn:
- Batik (re-using fabric, printing, natural dyes)
- Sewing (basic stitches in hand sewing and embroidery and using a sewing machine)
- Design (sustainability, resource management, and reimagining)
- Decoration (embellishments, fixings and fastenings)
Benefits:
Skill-building + design thinking + creativity + self-expression + improves fine motor skills + problem-solving.
Schools will:
- Pick your class from KS2
- Schedule 6 sessions (weekly consecutive afternoons)
- Fits into the national curriculum for Key Stage 2 – D&T
