Transforming Waste into Art: Our Journey with Decommissioned Scratch Cards

For several years Art4Space has been taking recycled artwork commissions.  These have included redundant computer cables, old DVD’s and bottle tops. Each time we have created something we have been proud to show off, artwork that is completely unique and high end out of waste materials.

When we were approached by Allwyn Impact for Good to create a new body of work using thousands of decommissioned scratch cards, we knew we had the chance to do something special.  Something that not only highlights our creativity, but also our commitment to sustainability.

At Art4Space, we’ve always believed that art can be a force for change. So the idea of taking a product designed for single use and transforming it into something lasting and meaningful felt both exciting and important. It was a challenge we were ready to meet head-on.

Over the course of several months, we created eight striking paper mosaics using over 8,000 scratch cards. Each card was carefully selected, rolled, and shaped using specific techniques we developed to emphasise colour, movement, and texture. The result? Detailed, flowing designs that mimic the traditional aesthetic of mosaics, but without using a single piece of ceramic or glass.

But this wasn’t just about aesthetics. It was about reimagining the value of waste. We wanted to show what’s possible when we shift our mindset — seeing materials not for what they were, but for what they could be. In a world overwhelmed by throwaway culture, we believe creativity can offer a powerful response: reuse, reinvent, and renew.

The project brought together a passionate team of artists, working alongside the wider Art4Space collective and 25 incredible Allwyn volunteers. Together, we dedicated over 500 hours to this project; cutting, rolling, assembling, and refining every detail. Each person brought something unique to the process and that collaboration brought the magic to the final pieces.

Ultimately, this work is about more than just recycling. It’s about transformation, turning what’s discarded into something meaningful, beautiful and lasting. It’s a reminder that sustainability and creativity can be compatible and work alongside each other rather than being shoe-horned in.

This project has strengthened our belief that art has a vital role to play in bringing awareness around sustainability. It invites us to reconsider our habits, to look again at what we throw away, and to imagine new possibilities. Waste isn’t the end of the story—it can be the beginning of something extraordinary.
