The Importance of Community – Reflection from work experience Ruby

During my time at Art4Space, one of the things that has impacted my life the greatest has been the most uplifting and abundant sense of community.

As someone who struggles with my mental health and has always found it hard to integrate myself into my surroundings, the people at Art4Space made it overwhelmingly easy. I have never witnessed a community so warm and welcoming.

Talking with other people at the space, the feeling was mutual. Archana and Marjorie used the same phrase of ‘warm and welcoming’ which shows just how prevalent this feeling is amongst the people who immerse themselves into this space. I was genuinely moved listening to the stories of people who have been attending for years, talking about how they feel Art4Space has become a kind of family to them where they would’ve had none, and how some have been inspired to move forward with their lives just by being here.

One thing that struck me most when talking with one of the attendees was the story of her son, who struggles with his Autism, who was unable to take GCSE Art, due to his declining motor skills, until Art4Space helped him realise his talent in mosaics. A boy who had lost hope in being able to do the one thing that brought him peace and calm, had finally found solace in an ancient craft.

I truly believe that art can be such a source of relief in so many people’s lives, if only they had access to a community such as ours.

I hope that for as long as I live, I may feel the warmth of community.
